Reducing Transportation Project Change Orders PDF Print E-mail

The City was experiencing higher than anticipated change orders for construction projects. The goal was to increase the percentage of change orders within tolerance (+/-10% of the actual bid amount) from 65% to 90%. Measurement and analysis revealed several factors resulting in change order problems. The City now has several initiatives to reduce the number of change orders. Proactive steps include tolerance goals, peer reviews, and monthly project coordinator meetings. Change orders are now within the project tolerance level 87% of the time. Since 2000, the reduction has saved $316,000. Other benefits include higher quality transportation projects, increased customer satisfaction and lower costs to the city.
