Verizon announced today that they have given the High Performance Government Network a $100,000 grant in order to help local government officials improve performance.

“We are pleased to support the High Performance Government Network in their work to help local government officials improve the performance of their organizations,” said Gale Given, Verizon Great Lakes Region President.  “Assisting local leaders improve the delivery of government services will benefit all citizens.”

The High Performance Government Network will use this grant to further extend services to local government officials, including training for government employees and networking opportunities for elected leaders.  The High Performance Government Network currently serves local governments in Indiana and Illinois.

“Verizon’s generous support will allow the HPG Network to help more local government leaders reduce costs and improve services,” said Ryan Chasey, HPG Network President.  “We are dedicated to supporting local government officials by providing them with resources and training so they can do more with less.”

Taxpayers stand to benefit from local government efforts to improve performance.  Indiana taxpayers could save over $1.2 billion and Illinois taxpayers could save over $1.8 billion if local governments use high performance principles to reduce their base budgets by 5%.

The High Performance Government Network was established in January 2008 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a culture of excellence in government by cultivating change through networking and learning opportunities.  The HPG Network was founded by the Indiana Chamber, Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, and Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs.  More information about the HPG Network is available at www.hpgnetwork.com

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its signature program, Thinkfinity.org, and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2007, the foundation awarded more than $67.4 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad. The foundation also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $25.1 million in combined contributions. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 3 million hours of community service since Verizon’s inception in 2000.  More information on the foundation is available at www.verizon.com/foundation.
